vashtie

have you guys met vashtie yet?

vashtie kola paris fashion week

i first noticed her when scrolling through some 'before the chloé show' looks at
paris fashion week. i loved the way she wore the brand -
in her own, unique, masculin/feminin way.

since then, i've read about her beauty regime, her wellness philosophy, and
took a peek into her closet. oh, and i follow her on snapchat!

trying to rediscover my style, my voice and, more importantly, my personality
(read: temperament, disposition) after an illness which left me in a near-constant state
of anxiety & self doubt, is certainly difficult. but when i come across a girl like vashtie
it makes my self (re)discovery easier: here's a girl that knows her style, her vibe,
her ethos, and embraces it. it's about taking, for example, a chloé runway look and
wearing it your own way.

+ don't get me started on her glowing skin + enviable curls. again: embracing who you are
& making the absolute best of what you've got.

a bit on her beauty regime:
'I use a concealer from NARS and then a powder foundation from Afterglow Cosmetics, which is organic, holistic, vegan.
Then I use a mascara from RMS, which is really great and an incredible beauty line, and I use blush from Afterglow.
Then I use any lip color from NARS.'
&
'For makeup I like to keep it simple. I use a powder foundation by Afterglow Cosmetics in the color Fawn. I smudge a little black eyeliner by Rejuva Minerals and my under eye concealer is #44 by RMS Beauty. As for my lips, I keep them moist with RMS Beauty Lip & Skin Balm in Simply Vanilla.'

+ on inspiration:
'Rebellious youth culture has always inspired me, the people that ignore the mainstream rules and make their own rules. All the misfits who start their own trends and make their own scene. I grew up in that culture and I believe it's what made me who I am today. That courage and creativity not only inspires my work,
but it inspires me to continue being me.'

one of the many symptoms i struggle with as a result of my illness is eye irritation + sensitivity (quelle glamour!) . .
which means that i am unable to wear eye makeup on a daily basis. . liner, mascara, shadow, nadda.

that hasn't stopped me from reading about beauty, and it certainly hasn't stopped me from making regular visits to sephora to swatch & play with colours (albeit on my hands & wrists only)

pre-illness, i was always a little hesitant to wear makeup. mostly because of my complex about my skin (which, looking back at, was actually pretty good). i would always find makeup looks i loved (chloé + lanvin were consistent runway favourites), but i lacked the self confidence to try anything out, almost always falling back on my skin insecurities as a reason for my inevitable failure.

i realize now that a little self confidence, and trial-and-error was all that was necessary.

all this brings me to one of my favourite makeup inspirations: lisa eldridge.

not only is she wildly talented, but her style and cool-girl vibe are also incredibly aspirational. weirdly enough, i love reading interviews with lisa where she talks about things other than makeup. diet, style + general attitude are far more interesting to me.

i have, below, compiled a few quotes from lisa, which reaffirms to me just how cool she truly is.

"I eat a bit of a polar-bear diet," she jokes, "with lots of oily fish. I also love avocado, chia seeds and almond milk - and I've just discovered chestnut gluten-free crackers, which are delicious."

"I try to have a smoothie every morning. I blend some green powder or green leaves with half a banana, linseeds, probiotics, Udo's Choice oil, acai or dark berries, and almond milk. I'm a connoisseur of dark chocolate and I've found brands - such as Conscious and Ombar - made with natural sugars that have a lower glycaemic-index level"

"At work I'm scruffy, as I may suddenly decide to paint someone silver, but at night I wear dresses. I like vintage, Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs and Sonia Rykiel."

"I love to internet shop on net-a-porter.com and matchesfashion.com , but I always ask, "Will I wear this forever?" I'm a sucker for that effortless "Marais" look - a sweater or blouse with jeans and boots."

chloe spring summer 2016

ah, chloé: how do i love thee?
let me count the ways.

'it's wispy wood-nymph stuff that falls loosely on a coltishly
feminine, boyishly rumpled creature that the brand has dubbed the chloé girl'

- desgning beyond chloé: inside clare waight keller's parisian home,

this is definitely one of the best descriptions i've read so far of
the elusive chloé girl':
none of the typical, predictable words throw in
like 'feminine' or 'romantic', but a sentence that gives the reader a
clear impression of a laissez-faire, elegant, done yet undone girl . .
wearing an equally laissez-faire, elegant, done yet undone chloé dress.

an introduction

hello.

i've created this blog for myself.

to write, to remember, to collect images, to (re)inspire myself.

as i begin to heal after a lengthy illness, i find that my style has stagnated.
it's been a few years since i've been able to wear what i want to, shop for what
i want, or feel the way i once imagined i would.

and so i decided to use this space to talk about what i like, to perhaps
re-inspire myself through text & images.

to find my way again.
